Think of England

England World, Book 2

Lie back and think of England…

England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage.

Curtis’s search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

As events unfold, Curtis realizes that Daniel has his own secret intentions. And there’s something else they share—a mounting sexual tension that leaves Curtis reeling.

As the house party’s elegant facade cracks to reveal treachery, blackmail and murder, Curtis finds himself needing clever, dark-eyed Daniel as he has never needed a man before…

If you’ve ever watched Downton Abbey and thought, “This show could use more espionage, blackmail, and murder,” this is the book for you! What I especially enjoyed about this book is that it is primarily a mystery/thriller with an excellent romance subplot. But more importantly, the romance subplot informs and adds to the tension of the main plot, which is a credit once again to the author’s ability to tell a seamless story.

The plot is well-constructed and engaging; and Ms. Charles really knows how to ratchet up the tension as Curtis begins to understand the level of danger he and da Silva face should Sir Hubert become aware of their investigations. But the real heart of the story is the beautifully tender, sometimes awkward but sexy romance that burgeons between the upstanding, straightforward ex-officer and the effete, bohemian poet.
— All about romance
A proper opposites attract, fake-romance-for-the-mission historical glamour romance, with some delightful tension and a narrative character who isn’t so much in the closet as has just never considered that this sort of thing might be an option but he’s very excited about the possibilities.
— Nerds like me
Downton Abbey meets M/M romance ~ an absolutely brilliant historical novel with industrial espionage, murder, blackmail and two unlikely heroes up against the odds. What more could I wish for?
